What's Next? Where Do U.S. Manufacturers Go From Here?

Professor Ben Jones : Kellogg School of Management

Ben Jones is an Associate Professor at the Kellogg School of Management, where he teaches business strategy in emerging markets.  He is also a faculty research fellow of the National Bureau of Economic Research and holds a courtesy appointment in Northwestern University’s department of political science.

An economist by training, his research focuses largely on obstacles to growth in developing countries.  He further studies the forces that drive technological progress in advanced economies.  His research has appeared in journals such as the Quarterly Journal of Economics and Science and has been profiled in media outlets such as CNN, US News and World Report, and the Economist.  Ben Jones earlier served as a special assistant to the Deputy Secretary of the Treasury during the Clinton Administration.


Margaret MacLean: Vice President, MacLean-Fogg International

Margaret MacLean is Vice President of MacLean-Fogg International, a division of the MacLean-Fogg Company dedicated to global manufacturing and engineering of components and assemblies for the automotive and utility industries. MacLean-Fogg encompasses 34 privately held operations throughout North America, Europe and Asia and combined sales of $800 million.

Margaret has 18 years of diversified experience in global manufacturing and supply chain management. Prior to MacLean-Fogg International, she worked at Kemper International and for the State of Illinois under Governor Jim Edgar as Trade Director. She attended Dartmouth College and Yale University in China.


Jerry Newton: Operations Manager, John Deere

Jerry Newton is the Operations Manager for John Deere's Davenport Works facility. In this capacity, Jerry is responsible for operational strategy and execution for 5 product lines within Deere's Construction and Forestry Division. These product lines represent a combined annual revenue of approximately $1.2 billion.

Mr. Newton started his career as a mechanical systems designer in Entergy Corporation's nuclear power group, and later worked as a consultant in Booz Allen Hamilton's energy practice. After joining Deere in 2000, he progressed through assignments in engineering, operations, and market development and also completed an expatriate assignment to the Russian Federation. While living in Moscow, he founded Deere's first manufacturing operation in Russia, John Deere Orenburg, which assembles air seeding equipment for the CIS markets. In March of 2007, he was appointed to his current position as Operations Manager.

Mr. Newton graduated from the University of Arkansas with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1995 and received an MBA from the Tuck School at Dartmouth College in 2000. He is married to Carrie Jeane Newton and has two daughters, Emery - 5 and Rachel - 1. His personal interests revolve around music and the continuous improvement of his Russian language skills.


E. Scott Santi (KSM '94): Executive Vice President, Illinois Tool Works Inc.

E. Scott Santi is an Executive Vice President of ITW Inc. In this capacity, Mr. Santi is currently responsible for 58 businesses in 19 countries with combined annual revenue of approximately $2.4 billion. Major business groups within his area of responsibility include arc welding products, electronic component fabrication products, and aircraft ground support equipment. He was elected to this position in October of 2004.

Mr. Santi (46) has spent his entire career with ITW. He joined the company in 1983 and has served in a variety of sales, marketing, general management, and group management assignments prior to his current appointment.

Mr. Santi graduated from the University of Illinois in 1983 with a B.S. degree in Accountancy, and received a Master of Management degree from Northwestern University in 1992. He is also a 2007 fellow of the Kellogg CEO Perspective Program.


Conrad Winkler (KSM MMM '95): Vice President, Booz Allen Hamilton

Conrad Winkler has assisted companies with Product Strategies, Manufacturing Strategies, Supply Chain Management, Lean Manufacturing, and Strategic Sourcing. He has recently co-authored "Make or Break: How Manufacturers Can Leap from Decline to Revitalization", published by McGraw Hill in April of 2008. He has authored several articles on manufacturing and building an advantaged supply base. Mr. Winkler is an expert in Lean Manufacturing from years of experience in the aerospace and automotive sector. Overall, he works across industries but focuses on automotive and industrial companies. Prior to joining Booz Allen Hamilton, Mr. Winkler was a nuclear trained officer on board a fast attack submarine in the United States Navy. He also held management positions in a brass mill, where he implemented various manufacturing process improvements. Mr. Winkler received his Masters degree (MBA) from Northwestern University’s Masters of Management in Manufacturing (MMM) program, a joint program between the Kellogg School of Management and the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Mechanical Engineering.


Rapid Innovations: Fast Failures

Professor Larry Keeley: Kellogg School of Management, President and co-founder of Doblin Inc.

Larry Keeley is a strategist who has worked to develop more effective innovation methods for over twenty-eight years. Larry is president and co-founder of Doblin Inc, an innovation strategy firm known for pioneering comprehensive innovation systems that materially improve innovation success rates. Doblin is now a member of Monitor Group, Cambridge MA, where Keeley is a Partner.

Since 1979, Keeley has worked with many global companies on innovation effectiveness, among them Aetna, American Express, Amoco, Apple, Baxter, Citigroup, Coca-Cola, Consignia, Diageo, Ford, GE, Hallmark, McDonald’s, Monsanto, Motorola, Novartis, Pfizer, Shell, Steelcase, Target, Texas Instruments, WellPoint, Whirlpool, and Zurich Financial Services. He lectures frequently and publishes regularly on strategic aspects of innovation. He has written book on innovation effectiveness "The Taming of the New," now in press, that is an exhaustive analysis of innovation and the superior methods that drive ROI.

BusinessWeek recently named Keeley one of seven Innovation Gurus that are changing the field, and specifically cited Doblin for having many of the most sophisticated tools for delivering innovation effectiveness. Keeley teaches graduate innovation strategy classes at the Institute of Design in Chicago, the first design school in the U.S. with a Ph.D. program, where he is also a board member. He lectures in executive education programs at Kellogg Graduate School of Management and is an adjunct faculty member for their core MBA and their Masters of Manufacturing Management programs. He also lectures at University of Chicago, plus business schools in Spain, England, Scotland and elsewhere. Keeley was a Senior Fellow of the Center for Business Innovation, in Boston. He is also a board member for Chicago Public Radio, where he has charted strategy for what has become an innovation engine for public radio in the US.


Steve Fahrenholtz: Director of Strategy and Innovation / I-Squad, General Mills

Steven Fahrenholtz is a founding member of the I-Squad, General Mills’ internal consulting group that specializes in new product strategy development. The I-Squad coaches business teams through a discovery process lasting between three and six months, with the end results being a clearly identified opportunity area that has been validated by product ideas.

The I-Squad has coached the development of new product strategies and within all of General Mills businesses including numerous international explorations.


Chris Roche: Director of Technology & Product Development, Eaton Corporation

With over 25 years of experience spanning Industrial Control, Factory Automation, Telecommunications, and Petro-Chemical industries, Chris Roche is an experienced leader with a proven track record in the areas of product development of a wide spectrum of technologies, operational execution, innovation, global management, and strategy deployment.

Chris Roche is currently Director of Technology and Product Development for Eaton Corporation in the Industrial Controls Division. He is responsible for global product development, quality, new product industrialization, and innovation practices for the Division. He manages global engineering centers in the U.S., Dominican Republic, and Suzhou China.

He was with Rockwell Automation for 18 years prior to Eaton Corporation, most recently as Director of Product Development and Quality for the General Motion Control Business.


Robert Siegel: X/Seed Capital Management

Drawing on over 22 years of experience spanning the semiconductor, networking, physical security, software and venture industries, Robert Siegel is an experienced leader with a proven track record in strategy definition, operational execution, product development, international sales and marketing, investing, fund raising and strategic relationships.

Mr. Siegel is currently with X/Seed Capital Management, an early stage venture fund that works to fund enterprises around advanced technical innovations where there is an opportunity to develop large commercial enterprises.

Prior to X/Seed, Mr. Siegel was the General Manager, Video and Software Solutions for GE Security (NYSE:GE). Mr. Siegel was responsible for General Electric’s video surveillance global Center of Excellence (COE), which generated revenues of approximately $350 million in 2007. Mr. Siegel’s responsibilities included developing the firm’s strategic direction in video, delivering on global product development and the formulation of the corresponding go-to-market activities.

Mr. Siegel has also served as Executive Vice President of Pixim Inc., Founder and CEO of Weave Innovations Inc. and held various leadership roles at Intel Corporation throughout his professional career.


Maheshwar Singh: Partner - Life Sciences & Healthcare - PRTM (KSM '95)

Mahesh is a partner in the Life Sciences and Healthcare practice at PRTM Management Consultants, a leading global consultancy focused on operational transformation. Mahesh’s business experience spans over twenty years in the consulting industry and with global healthcare corporations. He leads PRTM’s Life Sciences practice focused on improving enterprise productivity and innovation excellence and he has worked with leading pharmaceutical and medical devices companies to better utilize the global R&D talent, focusing on the emerging markets of India and China.

Mahesh has over 20 years of industry and management consulting experience. He began his career in the medical products division of British Physical Labs in India and he has worked at Abbott Diagnostics division and KPMG Strategic Services prior to joining PRTM.


The New General Manager

Professor Bill White: McCormick School of Engineering

Mr. White is a Professor in the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois since January 1998. In 2004 he received Northwestern Alumni Association’s Teaching Excellence Award. He was named McCormick teacher of the year in 2001.

Prior to Northwestern he served as CEO and Chairman of the Board of Bell & Howell Company since 1990. Previously he had served as Chairman of Whitestar Graphics, Inc. Before his association with Whitestar in 1989, Mr. White was Executive Vice President and a Director of USG Corporation. He has also been president of Masonite Corporation and prior to that spent seven years with the Mead Corporation in Dayton where his last role was Group Vice President of Consumer and Distribution. He started his career with Hart Marx Corporation.

His latest book “From Day One: CEO Advice to Launch an Extraordinary Career” was released in November 2005. He is a sought after speaker and frequent guest on TV and radio interview shows.

Mr. White is an Industrial Engineering graduate of Northwestern University and he received an MBA degree from Harvard University.


Jeff Bougher: President and CFO, M4 Sciences (KSM MMM '02)

Jeff Bougher was recently named President and CFO of M4 Sciences, an Indiana start-up specializing in ultra-precision machining accessories and the manufacture of nano-structured particulates and meso-scale metallic fibers. He received a B.S. and M.S. in Aeronautical Engineering from Purdue University and has and M.B.A. and M.E.M. from Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management via the MMM Program. Mr. Bougher’s international experience includes roles as Plant Manager, Director of Operations for the Timken Company in Wuxi, China where he launched the plants first high volume export program to a major US automotive OEM and developed a culture of quality that resulted in a 75% reduction in customer complaints and concerns while improving year-over-year productivity. Prior to that, he was Manager of Operations Strategy for the Automotive division of Timken where he led the global rationalization of North American needle bearing operations, played a coordinating role for the rationalization of European operations and managed the make/off-shore/outsource decisions related to rationalization efforts. In previous roles, Mr. Bougher has managed both union and non-union shops and has held a variety of staff positions including roles in R&D, Program Management and Finance.


George Foo: EVP of Operations - Embedded Computing & Power, Emerson Electric

George has been with Emerson for almost 7 years. He is currently the EVP of Operations for Emerson’s Embedded Computing and Power division. A $2 Billion division within Emerson’s Network Power Group. George has responsibility for six world class factories in Asia as well as eight Design Centers worldwide. He is located in Hong Kong.

Prior to joining Emerson, George spent 25 years at Lucent Technologies where he started his career in Manufacturing Technology R&D and went on to various Operational and staff assignments in the USA and in Asia.

George has a PhD in Materials Engineering from MIT and an MBA in Finance from New York University. He has published a dozen papers on supply chain management and he has collaborated with the Stanford University Supply Chain Forum in authoring several joint presentations.


Tom Goesch: Managing Director - Power Electronics

Thomas C. Goesch is the Managing Director for Power Electronics and Hybrid Electric Vehicle Products for Delphi Electronics and Safety and has been in this position since August, 2004. He reports to the director of Advanced Development and Business Planning.

Prior to Goesch’s current position at Delphi Electronics and Safety, he was the product line manager for Diesel Powertrain Controls.

Goesch began his automotive career in 1976 as a summer intern at the former AC Spark Plug Division of General Motors (GM) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Goesch earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1977 and a master’s degree in business administration in 1983 from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

In earlier assignments, he served as product line manager for Instrumentation and Displays, interim director of Systems and Software Engineering, and Chief Engineer of Delphi’s Liverpool, England operations. Goesch also lead the Delphi team that introduced the world’s first automotive Head Up display in 1988.


Kaj Grichnik: Vice President, Booz Allen Hamilton

Kaj Grichnik is a vice president in Booz Allen Hamilton’s Munich office. As a research and practice leader in manufacturing transformations, he has visited more than 350 factories in the past 15 years. His manufacturing expertise has focused on the pharmaceutical, food, automotive and aerospace industries. He has recently co-authored "Make or Break: How Manufacturers Can Leap from Decline to Revitalization", published by McGraw Hill in April of 2008.

Before joining Booz Allen, Mr. Grichnik worked in the biotech industry. He received masters degrees in geology and microeconomics and holds an MSc from the MIT Sloan School of Management. He is fluent in Dutch, English, French, and German.

Professor David Matsa: Kellogg School of Management

David Matsa is an Assistant Professor of Finance. Professor Matsa conducts research in the areas of corporate finance and industrial organization, focusing on connections between business and financial strategy. His recent research examines optimal corporate capital structure determination, concentrating on the role of strategic motivations and the impact on business investments.

Professor Matsa received his Ph.D. in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Prior to graduate study, he worked as a consultant at McKinsey & Company.



Mike Donohoe (KSM '95): Vice President - Business Development, Danaher Corporation

Mike is currently the Vice President of Business Development for Danaher’s $1.7b dental products business. He manages the global acquisition and partnering activities in this fragmented, high growth industry. Dental is the newest of the Danaher businesses, entering with its first acquisition roughly four years ago and currently the #2 market share player globally.

As President of Gendex/DEXIS from 2005-2007, Mike was responsible for the development of strategic business and operational initiatives, organizational development and driving market share leadership in the high growth digital imaging segment.

Gendex/DEXIS is a leading provider of dental x-ray and imaging solutions for dentists worldwide. The business is an integration of three acquisitions over the last four years (Gendex Corporation, DEXIS LLC and Dentrix Imaging) and is part of the Medical Technologies platform at Danaher Corporation.

Mike has been with Danaher since 2003 as Vice President of Business Development (M&A) for Fluke Corporation in Everett, Washington, where he was responsible for served market expansion, acquisition target cultivation and due diligence management. At Fluke, Mike had an integral role in driving their growth as a business platform.

Prior to joining Danaher, Mike was Senior Director of Strategy for Philips Electronics, where his key responsibilities were development of strategy and portfolio management. Other corporations Mike has worked for in the past include Bain & Company and the Hamilton Standard and Otis Elevator divisions of United Technologies. Mike has a demonstrated record of developing and driving business strategies aimed to deliver substantial and sustainable results.

Mike earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he majored in Mechanical Engineering. He subsequently earned his MBA from Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.


Jeff Gonyo (KSM '88): Founder & President, Geneva Glen Capital LLC

Jeff Gonyo is the Founder and President of Geneva Glen Capital, a private equity investment firm based in Chicago, IL focused on acquiring lower middle market companies. Jeff has over 18 years of private equity investing experience with a successful investment track record of a realized compounded annual return of 63% on invested capital over his career. Jeff has invested in and managed portfolio companies across numerous industry investment cycles in traditional buyouts, recapitalizations, take-privates, industry consolidations, and turn-around investments. He has been an active board member of more than a dozen companies and led control investments which have completed over 130+ add-on acquisitions. Jeff employs a generalist industry approach though numerous prior investments within the consumer products, healthcare, business/consumer services, insurance, publishing, and industrial manufacturing industries.

From 1997-2008, Jeff was a Managing Director at Wind Point Partners, a leading private equity firm with almost $2 billion under management. Previously, he was an investment professional at private equity firms GTCR and Heller Investments as well as a senior strategy consultant with Ernst and Young and CPA with Price Waterhouse. Jeff received his MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and his BS with Honors in Accounting from Indiana University.


Paul Mayfield: Managing Director - Due Diligence and Compliance, Willis Stein & Partners

Paul M. Mayfield is Managing Director-Due Diligence and Compliance for Willis Stein & Partners. He is responsible for accounting due diligence and Portfolio Company accounting compliance. Prior to joining Willis Stein in 2000, Mr. Mayfield was a Partner in Ernst & Young LLP’s Chicago office in the merger and acquisition due diligence group and was a founding member of that practice in 1987. Over the next 13 years, Mr. Mayfield managed more than 300 due diligence engagements involving middle market transactions. From 1977 to 1987, Mr. Mayfield held various positions with Ernst & Young's audit department where he served both private and SEC reporting clients. Mr. Mayfield received an M.B.A from the University of Chicago and holds a B.A. degree from Cornell University. He also is a Certified Public Accountant.
